In 1975, under a new Labour Government, the Prime Minister, Harold Wilson, organised a Referendum on whether Britain should stay in the Common Market. The campaign to stay in was heavily subsidised by the Government and the Common Market.
The result was a victory for those wanting Britain to retain its membership of the Common Market.
There was, of course, no question of the referendum being rerun.
