A Question of Racism?

Dr Vernon Coleman MB ChB DSc FRSA

A film production company wants to make a TV series based on my Bilbury books.

They have one demand.

To make the series saleable to the politically correct, the young doctor who is the Ďheroí of the books must be black.

In principle, I have no problem with that.

Except that I canít help wondering how many young black GPs there were in rural practices in Devon in the 1970s.

And it seems to me that if the young doctor is black then the whole nature of the series will be changed Ė like it or not the question of the doctorís skin colour will become a factor in the way things unfold.

And instead of the series being about a young doctor finding his way in a small village, it will be about a young black doctor finding his way in a small, English community.

And that isnít what I had in mind when I wrote the books. Itís a fine series for someone else. But itís not my series.

So, thank you but no thank you.
