The Secret Lives Of
Cats
Vernon Coleman's latest cat book
is his most ambitious and most moving yet. The Secret Lives Of Cats
consists of selected letters between two cats, Lemon-Coloured Lion Heart with
Long Fine Whiskers and his mother.
The book begins with a letter which
Lemon-Coloured Lion Heart With Long Fine Whiskers sent to his mother when the
two cats were first separated. The rest of the book consists of a selection of
the subsequent 'letters' which were exchanged between the two cats, and are a
revealing record of the developing relationship between a loving and caring
mother and her maturing kitten.
Cats don't write letters, of course.
They don't take a pen and a piece of paper, jot down their thoughts, fears, news
and dreams, fold the paper, put it into an envelope, seal the envelope, add an
address and a stamp and then put the resultant slim packet into a post box. Cats
can, and do, communicate with one another (and can do so over long distances)
but they don't need to do so by sending one another letters.
Cats
communicate with one another using their own effective, efficient form of
telepathy called 'felipathy'.
Many cat lovers (naturally unaware of the
phenomenon of felipathy) have often expressed innocent astonishment at the
amount of time cats spend sleeping. The cats are, in fact, frequently busy
exchanging messages with other cats. The twitches and involuntary movements
which can often be observed among sleeping cats are simply signs that they are,
in fact, engaged in an unusually hectic and, perhaps, emotionally-charged
conversation with another cat.
This is the first time Uprights have ever
been allowed access to the private correspondence exchanged by cats. The
Secret Lives of Cats is full of wisdom and humour. You'll laugh at Lemon's
innocence and his mother's wise answers and you'll hold your breath as Lemon
faces the biggest challenge of his life. This book will make you smile, cry and,
at the end, feel warm all over.
