Is Education A Waste of Time and Money?

Dr Vernon Coleman MB ChB DSc FRSA

I sometimes think the entire educational process is a waste of time, money and energy.

From the age of four or thereabouts we are fed and forced to digest and then regurgitate vast quantities of information. Much of that information is of limited or negligible value.

Apart from learning how to read and write, I spent much of my two decades of formal education studying, learning and repeating information which has been of absolutely no value to me.

The modern educational process exists to filter and grade students in order to decide whether or not they are suitable to be promoted to the next level of the process. The final result is a certificate which is supposed to provide the owner with a ticket into the world of well-paid employment.

But the whole irrelevant nonsense could be replaced with a single well devised intelligence and personality test and our education could be over by the age of six at the latest.

We could then begin apprenticeships for our chosen careers.
