LET'S FORCE TONY BLAIR TO KEEP HIS PRE ELECTION PROMISE ON VIVISECTION! The following petition is now closed and around 150,000 names have been handed in to Tony Blair. The text below explains the background to the petition but you can no longer send in your name. Thanks to everyone who supported the petition. A message from Dr Vernon Coleman In December 1996 the Labour Party promised me that if elected they would hold a Royal Commission to investigate the value of experiments involving animals. Since then I have repeatedly drawn attention to the fact that the Labour Government has failed to stand by this promise. (I have also repeatedly drawn attention to the fact that Mr Blair and the Labour Government have broken a number of other promises made to me - including a firm promise to give full Government support to any proposed ban on hunting). I am not giving up. I am determined to do everything I can to ensure that the promise is held. I believe we can force the Labour Party to hold a Royal Commission on vivisection. The Government is weakening - we just need one more big push to force them to give in. But we need to work together. On Sunday 25th April The Sunday People (for which I write a weekly column) starts a full scale campaign demanding that Tony Blair stick to his promise. This government has shown that it does take notice when large numbers of people stand up and shout. It was the massive pro-hunting demonstration in London which meant that the anti-hunting bill was lost. One thing in our favour on this issue is that there isn't going to be a massive pro vivisection demonstration - there simply aren't that many people around who want vivisection to continue. So, please help me force Tony Blair to stick to his promise. Together we can do it. For the sake of the animals we can save together I hope you will help me. Please join
this campaign by sending the following message - along with your name and address - direct
to the The People newspaper as quickly as possible. It is crucial that we get as many
signatures as possible. The closing date for the petition is 31st May 1999. Yours sincerely Vernon Coleman |
