Here's a true news
story from Britain 23rd October 2007:
A man who left a 96-year-old war
veteran blind in one eye after attacking him on a packed train was given a three
year supervision order. The man, who launched an unprovoked attack on the
96-year-old in Croydon, South London, was found guilty of grievous bodily harm
after the attack was caught on closed circuit television.
Now, try
replacing the words `96-year-old war veteran' in the first sentence with these
alternatives:
1. A 35-year-old American banker with connections to the
White House. 2. Gordon Brown's wife. 3. Prince Harry. 4. A six-year-old
girl. 5. Tony Blair's former flat mate 6. A policeman.
If that
doesn't convince you to suspect that Britain is an ageist society then nothing
will.
