William and Harry – Doing More Harm than Good
Dr Vernon Coleman MB ChB DSc FRSA
I fear that Princes William and Harry will do far more harm than good with their endless preaching about mental illness.
The danger is that their approach may encourage the young to assume that all sadness, disappointments and frustrations are signs of mental illness.
A staggering number of young people already regard themselves as mentally ill, and the royal campaign will make things worse.
One in four young people already claim they have mental illness!
The danger is that as a result of the campaigning being done by William and Harry, another few million young people will visit their doctor and expect treatment.
And so another few million will start taking benzodiazepines and anti-depressants – with disastrous results.
These are addictive drugs which are already wildly over prescribed.
William and Harry may mean well (though I fear I am not entirely convinced that they are not merely looking for good publicity and for ways to give the royal family a `purpose’) but they are going to make things worse.

The Benzos Story by Vernon Coleman is now available as a paperback on Amazon. It describes the first 20 years or so of my campaign to control the overprescribing of these drugs.
