Challenge for All Medical Journalists

Dr Vernon Coleman MB ChB DSc FRSA

Medical journalism is at an all-time low. Too many journalists who write on health matters simply regurgitate what they are told by PR people and members of the medical establishment. And there are hardly any 'new’ medical stories published these days. Modern medical writers are lazy or over-impressed by authority. A journalist’s job is to question the official line on everything.

Here’s a challenge to all medical journalists:

Make a list of your ten biggest health stories from the past year.

I bet that at least half of those stories appeared in books I wrote 20 or more years ago.

Moreover, those stories were then dealt with more accurately and in greater depth than today.

Millennial medical writers should feel embarrassed and ashamed.

Many of the stories you now consider `topical’ were dealt with in detail in my book How To Stop Your Doctor Killing You.

(Incidentally, journalists might like to take a look at the list of my scoops on this website. The list appears on the website’s first page and is headed `Dr Vernon Coleman’s Warnings, Forecasts and Predictions'.)
