Passing Observations 243

Dr Vernon Coleman

1. Some of the people offering online advice on health matters are sometimes not quite what they seem to be. At least one `doctor’ who recommended the covid vaccine and then changed his mind is actually a qualified nurse with a doctorate but not a medical practitioner. Several very well-known `doctors’ who regularly offer advice and opinions don’t have the sort of medical qualifications that would have entitled them to sign death certificates, and have never practised medicine as GPs or hospital consultants, but are actually dentists, nurses, biochemists, pharmacists, osteopaths or chiropractors. A surprising number of those who describe themselves as doctors actually have PhDs in botany, chemical engineering, music, art appreciation or divinity and probably know no more about the practice (or theory) of medicine than your dog’s uncle. Most drug company employees who are called `doctor’ actually have PhD degrees rather than medical degrees. For honesty’s sake those who call themselves `doctor’ should always, and frequently, say what sort of doctorate they have.

2. Donald Swann (the piano playing half of Flanders and Swann) wrote a lovely book called `The Space Between the Bars’ in which he argued that we are all ostracised at some time for one reason or another. He points out that those who are poor, short of food and living in overcrowded accommodation are effectively in a prison. `Are there not men all over the world locked away from their families by work in a remote place, and women locked away for years by the chores of housework when they know well that they are fitted for other tasks, and that the years are taking away from them opportunities that may never return? Are not all these `free’ people in prison?’ Swann talks of those imprisoned by old age, those imprisoned in institutions and those imprisoned by anxiety or prejudice. The events of the last four years have shown how our governments will deliberately use fear as a weapon to imprison us within our own anxieties.

3. A friend who visited a hospital recently spent 30 minutes trying to find a parking space, ten minutes trying to find their way around the hospital, one minute with a doctor, ten minutes trying to find their way out of the hospital and 30 minutes queuing to pay the car park fee.

4. How many people remember that Gordon Brown, a former Chancellor and former Prime Minister of Britain, sold 60% of Britain’s gold reserves at the very lowest price in 1999? Brown sold the gold at under $300 an ounce. It is now at $2,300 an ounce. (My book `Gordon is a Moron’ is available again in paperback – for those who want to be reminded just how big a mess Brown made when he was in charge of Britain.)

5. `We know they are lying. They know they are lying. They know that we know that they are lying. We know that they know that we know they know they are lying. And still…they continue to lie.’ – Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn.

6. Dozens of currently available books by Vernon Coleman can be found in the Bookshop on www.vernoncoleman.com All 15 books about the village of Bilbury are available as `The Young Country Doctor’ series and are available as paperbacks and eBooks. And all four novels about Mrs Caldicot are available as paperbacks and eBooks.

7. `The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there.’ –L.P.Hartley.

8. Britain now provides medical and financial support for more than 400 mental health conditions. I bet there isn’t a doctor in Britain who can name all 400 conditions without a crib sheet.

9. Sunak is planning to increase defence spending to £87 billion a year so that we can kill more foreigners that we aren’t at war with and have never met.

10. In 1842 Charles Smith was taken to the US as a slave and sold in New Orleans to a man called Smith (hence his name). Mr Smith was forced to retire from a citrus farm in 1955, at the age of 113, because he was officially considered too old to climb trees. I applaud the official who apparently considered 112 to be an acceptable age for climbing trees. The fact is that most centenarians keep working for as long as they are able (or have, at least, kept themselves busy). The one thing they have in common is that they never accept the nonsense that just because you are old in years you must allow yourself to be stuffed in a corner until you die. (Taken from ‘Climbing Trees at 112’ by Vernon Coleman – available via the bookshop on www.vernoncoleman.com The subtitle is `Real Life Inspirations for the Over 65s’.)

11. Anyone supporting Israel or trading with Israel is a war criminal and should be treated as such.

12. It is my opinion that anyone who claims that germs do not exist is an ignorant fool. Deaths from infection dropped dramatically when surgeons started to wash their hands and to use chlorinated-lime solution to sterilise their instruments. I do not know one medical doctor in Britain who believes that germs do not exist, though there are, I believe, a few British trolls who believe there are no germs, and who also believe that the earth is flat. I suspect that these trolls are probably members of the 77th Brigade, paid to cause confusion.

13. The Green Party gets around 1% of the vote in Britain (which, by coincidence, is roughly the same as the number of people who think they are Napoleon). And yet the nation’s policies (such as the Government’s enthusiasm for Net Zero) are designed to keep these nutters happy.

14. Devon and Cornwall now want to tax tourists to keep them out. One can only assume that both counties are so awash with heavy industry that they will not miss the income from the tourists.

15. Children are going to have to `show’ ID to use the internet. This may sound like a `good thing’ but it is another step towards the digital world which all sane people dread.

16. A major hospital is now telling its staff to avoid using disposable gloves in order to save the planet. This is a hospital which for two years insisted that staff, patients and visitors all wore face masks. Disposable gloves save lives. Face masks kill people.

17. Cancer among the young who were jabbed with covid-19 is increasing massively. Just a coincidence, of course.

18. `Accuse your enemy of what you are doing as you are doing it to create confusion.’ – Karl Marx

19. I believe that anyone who works for YouTube, the BBC, Facebook or any mainstream media is guilty of murder. By suppressing the truth and spreading misinformation and disinformation they knowingly helped kill innocent members of the public who were denied the chance to hear the truth.

20. My book on masks (which is now banned again) is available as a free PDF on www.vernoncoleman.com
