Book of the Week No 11

Dr Vernon Coleman

Today’s `Book of the Week’ is actually four novels: Mrs Caldicot’s Cabbage War, Mrs Caldicot’s Knickerbocker Glory, Mrs Caldicot’s Oyster Parade and Mrs Caldicot’s Turkish Delight. You may have seen the film of Mrs Caldicot’s Cabbage War - the first book in the series. It has become a classic and is still shown on television several times a year. When the film was released in the cinema, audiences stood up and applauded at the end. I doubt if people do that when they watch it at home but they probably stand up, if only to stretch their legs and go to the loo. Mrs Caldicot is a feisty pensioner who is dumped in a nursing home by her relatives, who want to flog her house and grab the money. Mrs Caldicot doesn’t like the cabbage or the nursing home and walks out – reluctantly taking the other residents with her. The other three books in the series describe their adventures together. In Mrs Caldicot’s Knickerbocker Glory they buy and run their own nursing home. In Mrs Caldicot’s Oyster Parade they go to Paris together. And in Mrs Caldicot’s Turkish Delight they inherit a seaside pier. The four books are available separately as paperbacks or as eBooks and there is an Omnibus volume. There is also a play which has been a huge success with amateur dramatic societies.
